Comprehensive Financial Planning*

As peoples’ lives become more complex, the need for comprehensive financial planning becomes more necessary. The goal of such planning is to get the proper blend of cash management, insurance coverages, savings plans, investment options, tax strategies, retirement plans, employment benefits and estate planning techniques to achieve the most effective result possible.

A comprehensive financial plan can be equated to a road map.

For example, nobody would set out on a drive from San Francisco to New York without a very detailed road map on how to get there. That road map would address certain issues such as road changes, detours, weather conditions, turnpikes or toll ways, rest stops, etc.

As with all of our clients, you are going on a very unusual drive. During your lifetime, your earnings will amount to $3, $5, $10,000,000 or more…a multi-million dollar drive... with obstacles such as inflation, interest rates, taxes, safety versus risk, liquidity, etc.

Comprehensive financial planning is a six step process that consists of (1) establishing financial goals and objectives, (2) gathering data, (3) processing and analyzing information, (4) recommending a comprehensive financial plan, (5) implementing the plan and (6) monitoring the plan for changes to ensure continuing appropriateness.

A financial plan usually begins with a module or two…that eventually is comprised of seven to twelve different modules…such as retirement planning, estate planning, investment planning, college funding, survivorship needs, long term care, business benefits, etc.

As new modules are added to the plan, older modules are reviewed and updated on a regular basis…thus assuring that at any given minute this plan is current with tax laws and changes in the investment arena.

For this road map, there is a modest ongoing fee. First, there is a fee for any new module that is added to the plan, and, of course, there will be a reduced fee whenever these modules are updated. Some modules may be updated on an annual basis, some once every two or three years.

Once again, simply view a financial plan as a road map, constantly changing to financially guide you on this multi-million dollar drive.
